The importance of proton-capture gamma rays in nuclear research is pointed out, and experimental apparatus and experiments are described to show the usefuless of (p, gamma ) reactions in studying level schemes and checking apparatus. The proton beam of the Delft Van de Graaff generator was used. The gamma scirtillation counters, associated electronic equipment, angular distnibution arrangement, determination of crystal efficiency, and proton energy calibration are described. Measurements were made on the reaction Si/sup 28/(p, gamma ) and resonances were observed at 0.370, 1.64, and 2.09 Mev. The decay scheme for each leval was determined. Angular distribution measurements at 0.370 Mev yield unambiguous spins of 5/2 for the resonance level and 3/2 for the first excited state in P/sup 29/. Experimental data for the P/sup 29/ excited levels were compared with minor-nucleus Si/sup 29/ levels. (T.R.H.)
