In some studies with scintillation chambers, the problem of discriminating between the events generated by one or more ionizing particles and a spontaneous shower between the gaps of the chamber is presented. One element of difference between the two events is the delay of the spurious scintillation with respect to that produced by passage of a particle. The use of a fast shutter whose open time is of the order of the delay would provide a possible method for the discrimination between true and spurious events. The experimental apparatus used and the types of measurements made to determine if such a shutter arrangement would be feasible are described. (J.S.R.)
