Various qualities of sintered beryllium were exposed to carbon dioxide under pressure of 30 to 60 atm, from 600 to 700 deg C. By study of the kinetics of corrosion and by micrographic examinations, the unfavorable influence of the presence of small amounts of water vapor in the gas was determined. The presence of carbon monoxide in very small proportion (a few percent) in the carbon dioxide, did not notably modify the corrosion. On the other hand, between 60 and 30 atm, the lowering of the test pressure clearly improved the compatibility of one of the qualities of beryllium with CO/sub 2/ even in the presence of humidity. Lowering the concentration of water vapor in carbon dioxide to a few ppm is necessary in order that the use of commercial beryllium, in the presence of this gas, under high pressure, can be considered at temperatures equal to or above 600 deg C.
