CORROSION-EROSION OF SENSITIZED AISI TYPE 304 STAINLESS STEEL IN A THORIUM DIOXIDE-URANIUM TRIOXIDE SLURRY

Journal Article · · Corrosion

Corrosion test loops were employed in evaluating the corrosion-erosion of sensitized AISI Type 304 stainless steel in a thorium dioxide--uranium trioxide slurry. It was found that sensitized, nonpickled Type 304 stainless steel was not attacked intergranularly and exhibited about the same corrosion rate as as-received Type 304. Type 304 stainless steel, sensitized and pickled, was attacked at appreciably higher rates than as-received Type 304 or than sensitized, nonpickled Type 304; however, when a layer of metal which had been corroded intergranularly by the pickling solution was removed by the action of the slurry, the attack by the slurry diminished.
