A preliminary study on the development of a device for the measurement of the lifetimes in the picosecond region is reported. The method proposed consists essentially of adjusting the phase corresponding to the instant of formation of an excited level and that corresponding to its deexcitation by emission of electromagnetic radiation on a hyperfrequency wave. The energy modulation and the detection of the instant of zero phase by spectrometry were the areas studied in this preliminary investigation. Beta spectrometry was possible with high resolution with junction detectors. The hyperfrequency modulation cavity with high shunt resistance was fabricated. The theoretical and experimental studies have shown that the determination of time intervals with a precision of 9.5 x 10/sup -11/ sec is possible. It thus appears possible to study levels with a lifetime of the order of 10/sup -10/ sec. (J.S.R.)
