The optimum conditions in the fabrication of UC of stoichiometric composition are found. The sintering and hot-pressing of UC powder and sintering of UC + Uproducing specimens with about 5% porosity are studied. The specific weight of UC determined pycnometrically is 12.97 plus or minus 0.09g/cm/sup 3/. The microhardaess phase is 923 plus or minus 56 kg/mm/sup 2/. The thermal conductivity of UC at 100 to 700 deg C varies from 0.028 to 0.04 cal/cm/sec/grad; the mean linear thermal expansion coefficient at 20 to 1500 deg C is 11.6 x 10/ sup -6/. The UC specimens under cyclic thermal treatment at 200 to lOOO deg C withstood 500 cycles; the specimens of UC + U withstood over 1000 cycles. (tr- auth)
