SPIN PRECESSION IN CLASSICAL RELATIVISTIC MECHANICS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4077660
The motion of a point particle with spin according to relativistic classical mechanics is shown to possess the following properties: (1) A free particle is not required to move along a straight line but may move along a helix in space or along a hyperbola in space-time; (2) the helical and hyperbolic motions are the classical analogues of zitterbewegung and pair production, respectively; (3) the effective mass M of the particle is in general not equal to its rest mass; (4) in a magnetic field B, the particle automatically possesses a magnetic moment eB sigma /Mc, where sigma is the spin; and (5) m is a constant of the motion in a uniform electric or magnetic field.
