IMPROVED LUBRICANTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4077627
Additives for lubricating oils may be prepared by irradiating solid paraffin wax constituents recovered from lubricating oils, usually with neutrons or gamma rays. The irradiation, preferably carried out on a wax fraction containing at least 80 wt. % paraffin hydrocarbons (chiefly straight chain) with 2l to 32 carbon atoms per molecule and a m.p. of 120 to 150 deg F, results in a hard rubbery material which dissolves in oil, improving its properties such as viscosity index, pour point, and shear stability. Such an additive is preferably used in amounts from 0.1 to 4 wt. % of the oil. Possible variants of this preparation method are described, e.g., using catalysts, and three examples are given.
