CHLORINATION OF TRAVANCORE MONAZITE FOR THE RECOVERY OF THORIUM AS THORIUM TETRACHLORIDE

A process for the recovery of thorium as anhydrous thorium tetrachloride from monazite sand was described. Thorium chloride was obtained by chlorinating monazite and subsequently distilling thorium chloride from the reacted mass by taking advantage of the differences in the volatility of the various chlorides. The product obtained contained 0.18% rare earths. (auth)
