Thermal decomposition of uranyl nitrate hydrate presents difficulties in a stationary system. By operating in a superheated water vapor stream at 400 deg C and using material previously heated to 180-- 190 deg C, it is possible to obtain UO/sub 3/containing 0.2-0.4% NO/sub 3/. Another feasible method consists of heating the hydrate tn 180 deg C at a rate of 5 deg C per hour, followed by denitration at 400 deg in superheated water vapor stream. The UO/sub 3/ obtained by this method contains 0.32% NO/sub 3/. Cerivatographic techniques were employed in the investigations. (OTS)
