THE FLUX OF PRIMARY COSMIC RAY $alpha$-PARTICLES OVER SOUTHERN ENGLAND

The flux of alpha particles in primary cosmic radiation was measured in a stack of nuclear emulsions exposed on November 20, 1958, over southern England. The 434 tracks produced by alpha particles entering the stack were detected by scanning the emulsions along a line 1 cm below the top edge. The flux of alpha particles at the scan line was 77 plus or minus 8 alpha particles/m/sup 2/ - Sr - S. Extrapolating this value to the top of the atmosphere, a value of 121 plus or minus 15 alpha particles/ m/sup 2/ - Sr - S was obtained. (M.C.G.)
