The needs connected to the general program of the CEA and the utilization of the existing reactors to satisfy these needs are reported. The fuel elements, graphite behavior, and compatibility between CO/sub 2/ and graphite are studied for the graphite-gas combination reactors. For the heavy water-gas reactors, the research programs include the fuel and the cladding or structural materials. Behavior of various fuels and the cooling circuits are of interest in the fast neutron reactors. The specific use to which each of the research reactors is put is briefly discussed. (J.S.R.)
