ADDITION OF ACETALDEHYDE TO FLUOROETHYLENES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4075288
Ultraviolet irradiation of gaseous mixtures of acetaldehyde and fluorinated ethylene resulted in complex mixtures of a ketone and an oxetane derived from addition of an acetyl radical to the CF/sub 2/ group of the olefin and by cycloaddition of the aldehyde to the olefin, respectively. Four olefins were studied: C/sub 2/F/sub 4/, C/sub 2/F/sub 3/Cl, C/sub 2/F/sub 3 /Br, and 1,1- dichloro-2,2-difluoroethylene. The ketones and oxetanes were isolated by vapor- liquid partition chromatography, and their physical properties are tabulated. The structure of the products and the orientation of the additions were studied by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. (D. L.C.)
