DOUBLE-Pm SOLUTIONS TO THE GAMMA-RAY TRANSPORT EQUATION BY THE MOMENTS METHOD

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4073861

The double spherical harmonic method of Yvon was applied to gamma -ray penetration problems in slab geometry and infinite media. Calculations were made for energy spectra, dose and energy buildup factors, and dose angular distributions. The spatial variation was treated with the moments method of Spencer and Fano, together with a polynomial reconstruction procedure. The results, when compared with ordinary spherical harmonic calculations, indicate that the double P-3 approximation gives about the sanae accuracy as the P-7 approximation, and that the double P-1 approximation compares favorably with the P-3 approximation. The spatial moments method for the double spherical harmonic treatment of the angular variation has the disadvantage of requiring considerably more computational time than for the ordinary spherical harmonic treatment.
