A STUDY OF ROTARY-SHAFT-SEALING CONCEPTS FOR PRESSURIZED-WATER REACTOR APPLICATION. Quarterly Progress Report for October-December 1963

Seals that can be used at 2500 psi and 600 deg F are being studied. Detailed experimental investigations are made of the mechanical face seal and the packed-gland seal concepts using highly instrumented, moderate-pressure, model seal systems. The major experimental effort in the study of mechanical face seals is directed toward determining the size and shape of the interfacial fluid film in the sealing gap. Observations have revealed microrupture within the fluid of the sealing gap and gross vaporization of the sealed water in the seal region under conditions sufficient for the occurrence of local boiling. Distortions of the seal ing interfaces as a result of sealed pressure are revealed. A computer program for the calculation of mechanical face-seal distortion is completed. Studies of packed-gland seal behavior show the development of microruptures, gross vaporization, and mode of failure of a seal system. Water leakage, temperature patterns, and frictional drag of the seal are being studied as a function of various operating modes and parameters. (N.W.R.)
