RESONANCES OF A CYLINDRICAL PLASMA COLUMN

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4073348
Research on resonances in a plasma column subjected to a transverse electric field is reviewed. In addition to the main dipole resonance, three classes of resonances are distinguished: higher order multipole resonances, longitudinal propagation effects, and Tonks-Dattner (T-D) resonances. A hypothesis for the origin of the T-D resonances is advanced that explains much of the experimental work. The explanation was verified by additional experiments. A full theory of the T-D resonances may be impracticable, but a simplified theory is presented. Calculations based on this approach the experimental results. 43 references. (auth)
