NUCLEAR MATERIALS FOR SPACE APPLICATIONS

The results of investigations on the suitability of Nb, Ta, and W alloys as cladding materials for nuclear space applications are discussed, together with the properties of the nuclear fuels UC, UO/sub 2, and UN. The merits of cermet fuels are also considered. A thermionic nuclear power conversion system is described, and evaluation results on the compatibility of the refractory metals, (emitter materials) with UC, UC/sub 2/, UO/sub 2/, and UC-ZrC at 1800to 2000 deg C are summarized.
