Fuel bundle manufacture for the NPD-2 reactor brought about research into powder metallurgy, machining compacted uranium oxide, ultrasonic tube inspection, zirconium fabrication, and surface treatment. The uranium oxide pellets were machinned so that the diameter had a tolerance of plus or minus 0.0005 in. Methods were developed for welding the Zircaloy-2 sheaths to the end plugs. Testing procedures for these welds are described. (M.C.G.)
