The molybdenum ion reduced by stannous chloride or hydrazine sulfate forms a complex compound with thiocyanate, which can be extracted by organic solvent from aqueous solution. The maximum absorption peaks of this compound were found at 335 and 468 m mu when stannous chloride was used as reducing agent and at 320 and 460 m mu when hydrazine sulfate was used. The absorbancies were proportional to the molybdenum content at these wavelengths and adoptable for the microdetermination of molybdenum. Organic solvents suitable for the extraction of molybdenum compound are acetate esters, alcohols, and mixed solvent of esters or alcohols with carbon tetrachloride or chloroform. Optimum acid concentrations for the extraction and spectrophotometnic determination of molybdenum are 0.9 to l.ON of hydrochloric acid in stannous chlonide reduction and 0.8 to 1.2N of sulfunic acid in hydrazine sulfate reduction method. About 1 to 10 gamma of molybdenum can be deterninned by this method. (auth)
