ELECTROREFINING PREPARATION OF HIGH PURITY THORIUM METALS

Journal Article · · Sci. Repts. Research Insts., Tohoku Univ., Ser. A
OSTI ID:4069015

High-purity thonium metal was prepared by electrorefining, that is, by using KThF/sub 5/ or anhydrous ThCl/sub 4/ dissolved in a NaCl-HCl eutectic mixture as the electrolyte and crude thorium metal as the anode. Rare-earth and other impurities were thoroughly removed and the reactor-grade thonium could be obtained. The microstructures and some properties of refined thorium were also examined. (auth)
