MEASUREMENT OF ASYMPTOTIC NEUTRON SPECTRA IN MULTIPLYING ASSEMBLIES CONTAINING U$sup 23$$sup 5$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4068924
BS>Asymptotic neutron spectra were measured in the center and from the surface of three U/sup 235/ hydrogen-moderated multiplying assemblies using the pulsed neutron technique. Two of the assemblies were heterogeneous water- moderated and one was homogeneous paraffin-moderated. They were of different size and hydrogen to U/sup 235/ ratios, so that absorption, leakage, and scattering varied. The measured spectra are compared with calculations based on Nelkin's scattering kernel for water and Goldman's scattering kernel for polyethylene (for the paraffin moderated assembly). Corngold's formulation is used in the epithermal energy range. The agreement with theoretical predictions is satisfactory when measured values of the asymptotic time-decay constant are used to calculate the spectrum. (auth)
