FISSION GAS RELEASE IN PWR CORE 1 BLANKET FUEL RODS UPON CONCLUSION OF SEED 1 LIFE

Zircaloy-clad naturul-UO/sub 2/ fuel rods were removed from the blanket of the PvyR (Shippingport) reactor at the conclusion of the first seed life (5800 EFPH), and the amount and composition of evolved fission gases were determined. At burnups of about 1.6 x lO/sup 20/ fissions/cm/sup 3/, fission gas releases of approximately 0.4% of ths total amount theoretically generated within ths fuel were measured; these corresponded to previously determined experimental values and also to those predicted by diffusion theory.
