AN ULTRASENSTITIVE MICROCALORIMETER AND THE HEATS OF FORMATION OF U$sup +4$(aq) AND UOH$sup +3$(aq) (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4066990
A sensitive solution microcalorimeter using a thermistoramplifier bridge and automatic recording was constructed and evaluated. The sensitivity is 1 x 10/ sup -//sup 5//sup deg /C; with magnesium, heats of solution in 1 M HCl were measured to plus or minus O-2% for samples of 19.51 mu g. The device was designed for use in determining thermodynamic functions of actinide elements and compounds. Heats of formation of U(IV) in 1 M HCl, U/sup 4//sup +/ (aq), UCl/sub 4/ (C) were redetermined and new values are reported for Np(IV), Np(IH) in 1 M HCl, and Np/sup 4//sup +/ (aq), Np/sup 3//sup +/ (aq).
