IMPROVEMENTS IN ION EXCHANGE METHODS OF SEPARATING ZIRCONIUM AND HAFNIUM

A method of separating hafnium and zirconium from a material by ion exchange is described. The material is dissolved in 0.1 to 4M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ and passed on to the resin after it is charged with the bisulfate anion HSO/sub 4/ . The resin is then developed by displacement using a sulfuric solution of a zirconium salt and the hafnium thus displaced is recovered. The resin, freed of its hafnium, is regenerated by elution with sulfuric acid. At least a part of the zirconium free of hafnium is obtained in the eluant. Examples of the use of the method are given.
