UPPER LIMITS FOR THE RADIATIVE CAPTURE CROSS SECTIONS OF $sup 27$Al AND $sup 31$P FOR $sup 16$O IONS

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
The radiative capture cross sections of Al/sup 27/ and P/sup 31/ for O/ sup 16/ ions with energies a few Mev above the expected thresholds for these reactions ( approximately 30 Mev) were not greater than 0.2 and 18 mu b, respectively. Activation methods were used and care was taken to avoid errors due to impurities in the targets and the recoil into the targets of reaction products from elsewhere in the irradiation assembly. A calculation based on the statistical theory of the compound nucleus predicts a cross section of 2 mu b for the capture in aluminum of O/sup 16/ ions at tbe energy used in these experiments. Various possible reasons for this over-estimation of the cross section are discussed. (auth)
