The formal theory of rearrangement collisions is developed from the standpoint of tbe S-matrix and is formulated in such a way that the asymptotic Hamiltonian is the same for the final and initial states. The orthogonality of these states makes it possible to formulate the theory of rearrangement collisions in a way similar to that of single potential scattering. The "prior- post" discrepancy is discussed and the generalized optical theorem is derived. (auth)
