COLLISIONAL-RADIATIVE RECOMBINATION AT LOW TEMPERATURES AND DENSITIES

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
The collisional-radiative recombination coefficient in cool tenuous H- H/ sup +/-- e plasmas is calculated by a new approximate method. It is found that if the electron temperature T/sub e/ is low, collisional effects are important even when the electron density n(c) is small: thus if T/sub e/ is 25 deg K and n(c) is 1 x 10/sup 3/ cm/sup -3/, alpha is almost 1.5 x 10/sup -10/ cm/sup 3/ sec/sup -1/ which is about 7 times the radiative recombination coefficient. Other approximate methods are discussed. (auth)
