Between electrodes at 10/sup -5/ to 10/sup -4/ torr, electric dis changes appear in the form of local confined spark and microdischarges. By means of many small current-limited spark discharges, it is shown that below a certain anode potential only microdischanges are observed. For the plane-parallel V2A electrodes used, this potential is 45 kv at 1 min. These microdischarges were studied by several methods. Oscillographic traces during a microdischarge show a characteristic current and potential course. As a criterion for the appearance of microdischarges, a threshold potential is defined. On a special electrode system, the effects of changes of coating on the electrode surface on the microdischarges are confirmed. Quartz oscillation measurements show that an increase in the mass coating occurs. Charge transport in microdischarges occurs mainly by electrons and H/sup +/ ions. Other results are described and discussed. (T.R.H.)
