STUDY OF EOCR MODIFICATIONS FOR TESTING FAST REACTOR FUELS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4061927
A stady was made of two methods for increasing the power generation in a fast reactor fuel element test sample (19-pin PuO/sub 2/--UO/sub 2/) in a fast test loop in the EOCR. The two methods, which involved hardening the EOCR spectrum and the use of a converter plate in place of a boron filter, did not result in any appreciable increase. However, an effective way of increasing the sample power is to increase the power density in the EOCR, and this way in combination with a cadmium or plutonium filter and fuel enrichment can increase the power from 0.22 to 1.8 kw/in.
