Study of the Penetration of Thermal Neutrons in Empty Cylindrical Channels Through Hydrogenous Media; ETUDE DE LA PENETRATION DES NEUTRONS THERMIQUES DANS DES CANAUX CYLINDRIQUES VIDES TRAVERSANT UN MILIEU HYDROGENE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4061926
The thermal neutron flux in empty cylindrical channels surrounded by hydrogenous media was studied theoretically, concluding with the development of a method of calculation. This method is based on the hypothesis of an equilibrium between the fast and thermal flux and on the application of the theory of scattering in a scattering medium and the theory of transport to the interior of the channel. The results of the measurement of the axial distribution of the thermal flux at the interior of two channels of different dimensions, installed in the reservoir of the SAPHIR reactor and in front of its core, are reported. A comparison was established between these results and the values given by the calculation method proposed. The agreement is very satisfactory. The maximum deviation between the measured and calculated values is of the order of 22% for one of the channels and 14% for the other. Other results concerned the radial distribution of the thermal flux at the interior and exterior of the channels and the axial distributions of the intermediary and fast flux. (tr-auth).
