PHASE-SPACE MATCHING OF LONGITUDINAL (PHASE) OSCILLATIONS USING THE INJECTOR AS THE MATCHING SYSTEM

There are two fixed points in one cycle of the phase space of the phase oscillation in either a Linac or a circular accelerator (Cirac): one stable and the other unstable. By introducing phase jumps in the rf it was found to be possible to put the phase-space ellipse of the phase-points of the particles at either one of these fixed points for any desired length of time and in any desired sequence. Numerical examples are given. The example is worked out for the phaseoscillation matching scheme from a drift-tube Linac preinjector which accepts an 800-kev beam from a CockcroftWalton machine, and gets its rf phase- space buckets filled, and injects into a traveling-wave Linac injector at 200Mev which in turn injects into a 1OOO-Bev AGS at 10 Bev. Linear and adiabatic approximations were used. (M.C.G.)
