Title: RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES FIXATION OF RADIOACTIVE RESIDUES. Quarterly Progress Report, October-December 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4061530

The radiant-heat spray calciner in the High-Level Radiochemistry Facility was used for additional experimental studies of full-level waste calcination. The unit was operated with Redox wsste, Purex waste plus sugar, Purex waste with phosphite added, and Purex waste to which cold fission products were added. Large (16 in.) diameter draft tubes, with and without fins, were the subject of a study to determine their effects on recirculation rates and feed capacities. The spray calciner off-gas filter overpressures were measured for various nozzle sizes, venturi shapes, filter permeibilities, and blowback air flow rate. The effect of composition on glass melting points, phase separation, and solubility was studied. Work on process and equipment for the hot cell glass experiment was carried on in cooperation with Brookhaven National Laboratory personnel. Work on the calciner melter was directed toward determining the melter capacity with two types of nonradioactive waste calcines. The use of immersion-type electric heaters in addition to heated air is being examined as an alternate low cost approach to heated air only for intank solidification. Thermodynamic data were obtained for three exchange reactions on eight inorganic ion exchangers. Pilot plant studies on intermediate-level waste treatment were continued. However, solids appeared recently in the condensate waste and caused processing difficulties. The solids contained a high concentration of bacteria, which may be due to raw cooling water being directed temporarily to the condensate receiver. Efforts are being made to correct this condition. Work was continued on defining flow sheet conditions for removal of cesium from Purex and Redox stored alkaline wastes. (auth)
