IMPROVEMENTS IN PROTECTING ALUMINUM ALLOYS AGAINST CORROSION

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4059516
The rate of corrosion of Al-Ni alloy fuel cans containing 0.5 to 2.5% nickel, 0.5 to 1% iron and 0.1 to 0.2% silicon and which are cooled by water at 150 to 350 deg C is greatly reduced by adding 800 to 1000 ppm SiO/sub 2/ to the coolant. The pH of the latter should be at least 5. The SiO/sub 2/ can be added as a soluble silicate, the cation being removed by ion exchange. Preferably the cans are given a pretreatment in the stagnant coolant during at least one day in order to create a protective aluminum silicate layer on their surface. (NPO)
