NEUTRON-DEFICIENT NUCLIDES OF HAFNIUM AND LUTETIUM

Neutron-deficient nuclides of lutetium and hafnium were produced by bombarding lutetium oxide with 300 to 400 Mev protons. The positron spectra of the different nuclides were measured with an anthracene crystal detector and a 256channel pulse height analyzer. Gamma radiation was also observed for Lu/sup 1/ /sup 6//sup 8/, Lu/sup 1//sup 6//sup 9/, Lu/sup 1//sup 7//sup 0/, Hf/sup 1//sup 6/ /sup 8/, and Hf/sup 1//sup 6//sup 9/ by means of a Nal crystal detector and the pulse height analyzer. The half lives and maximum positron energies observed were: Lu/sup 1//sup 6//sup 8/, T/sub 1//sub ///sub 2/ = 7.0 min, E /sub sub b/ /sub b/+ = (1.20 plus or minus 0.05) Mev; Lu/sup 1//sup 6//sup 9/, T/sub 1//sub / //sub 2/ = 1.5 days; Lu/sup 1//sup 7//sup 0/, T/sub 1//sub ///sub 2/ = 1.9 days, E/sub sub b//sub b/+ = (1.8 plus or minus 0.1) Mev; Hf/sup 1//sup 6//sup 8/ T/sub 1//sub ///sub 2/ = 22 min, E/sub beta +/ = (1.7 plus or minus 0.1) Mev; Hf/sup 1//sup 6//sup 9/,T/sub 1//sub ///sub 2/ = 1.5 hr; Hf/sup 170/, T/sub 1/2/ = 9 hr.
