EXPERIENCE WITH THE TESTING OF RADIOSENSITIVITY IN CANCER OF THE UTERINE CERVIX

Journal Article · · Neoplasma (Czechoslovakia)
OSTI ID:4057209
Studies were conducted in 100 patients with cancer of the uterine cervix, who had been treated by radiotherapy more than 5 yr previously, by colposcopy, microbiology, and cytology tests. Particular attempts were made to determine the sensitivity of tissue to radiation by the Graham criteria, as expressed by radiation response (RR) and sensitization response (SR). It appeared from the results that the assessment of prognosis of radiotherapy according to the cytological diagnosis of RR can be best utflized in women who are still menstruating. The assessment of prognosis on the basis of SR determination proved less vaiuable. The occurrence of cells showing a SR seemed to be influenced by the following factors: hormonal status of patierts: the lower the estrogen level, the higher the SR; inflammatory factors: Trichomonas vaginalis and other microorganisms, affecting the superficial layers of the vaginsl epithelium, give rise to false high SR; state of vacularization of the carcinomatous process, which determines the exfoliative processes of carcinoma tissue and the extent of necrobiosis; and state of immunologic processes and by the resistance of the organism. A good RR was found in 70% of women surviving 5 yr compared with only 3.4% in those dying within the 5-yr period. If only menstruating women were conside red, the respective values were 93 and 20%, showing the greater reliability of RR as a criterion in this younger group of women. A high SR was found in 46% of surviving and 54% of nonsurviving women (66 and 44%, respectively, in the menstruating group), showing the lower reliability of SR as compared with HR. (BBB)
