Staged, anaerobic, aerobic and nitrifying bacteria to biodegrade organics in landfill leachate have been utilized at on-site treatment facilities. This paper discusses a specific application which demonstrates the synergistic affects of incorporating these techniques in the treatment scheme. This case study of the Bedford-Fulton-Huntington Solid Waste Authority on-site leachate treatment system presents the design and performance data collected. A review of the process design selection, treatability testing, final engineering considerations, and full scale system demonstration are discussed. Capital costs as well as operation and maintenance costs are also presented.
