  1. Innovative Steam Technologies, Cambridge, Ontario (Canada)

An innovative and patented Once Through heat recovery Steam Generator (OTSG) has become available to combined cycle power plant designers and owners. This is the first new technology to be introduced into the heat recovery field since the wide scale introduction of combined cycles. Over one million operating hours have been accumulated on the units now in service. However, many power plant designers and developers are not aware of the OTSG`s superior technology and the many cost, operating and performance advantages that may be obtained when compared with drum boilers. In a system designed for a drum boiler the OTSG unit can often be comparatively evaluated and selected as best for the plant. However the greatest cost and operational advantages are achieved by integrating the OTSG into the power plant`s system at the conceptual plant design phase. In some applications, such as steam injection or steam cooling for peaking turbines the OTSG may be the only technically feasible approach. A description of the OTSG configurations and how they differ from drum boilers is provided as a foundation for evaluation. The ultimate simplification of the steam generation process is described along with the general design and construction. Comparative evaluation criteria of OTSG technology versus drum boilers is provided with field experience used to illustrate the comparisons. Both initial and operating cost evaluation is emphasized. An evaluation of the simplification to the power plant`s overall systems configuration and operation is also discussed.
