ELASTIC SCATTERING OF NEGATIVE PIONS BY PROTONS AT 226 MEV (thesis)
The total and differential elastic cross sections of 226Mev pi /sup -/ scattered by protons were measured. For detection of elastically scattered pi / sup -/ only, the proton recoiling from the pi -p collision was detected in coincidence with the associated scattered meson. Pulse height analysis of the Cherenkov radiation produced by the scattered beam was used to differentiate between pi - and electrons in the scattered particles. A total cross section of 52.9 plus or minus 1.4 mb was measured. Analysis of the differential cross section data gave d sigma /d OMEGA = (1.OOO plus or minus 0.012) STA(0.66 plus or minus 0.02) + (0.41 plus or minus O.O5) cos theta + (2.16 plus or minus 0.08) cos/sup 2/ theta !, which supports the hypothesis that only S and P waves contribute appraciably to the scattering. Integration gave a total elastic cross section Of 17.4 plus or minus 0.3 mb, in agreement with other recent measurements. The absolute value of the real part of the forward scattering amplitude was determined to be - 0.129, which agrees with that calculated with pion dispersion relations. (auth)
