An ionization chamber that is deliberately arranged to operate at an ion- collection efficiency below 85% is described. It is adapted for used in control or measuring devices and is effective to conduct a current substantially free from random fluctuations so that the current always represents an accurate indication of a variable condition being measured. A method of testing a variable condition is provided, wherein ionizing radiation impinges on an ionization chamber and the instantaneous value of the condition being tested determines the amount of radiation impinging on the chamber at that instant.
