Sedimentary $sup 239$ $sup 240$Pu phase distributions in Lake Michigan sediments

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4054944

The study was conducted on sediment samples obtained along a transect in the Grand River and extending into deep water of Lake Michigan. Procedures are described for total $sup 239$Pu and $sup 240$Pu determinations by acid extraction; $sup 239$Pu and $sup 240$Pu determinations for magnesium chloride fractions; $sup 239$Pu and $sup 240$Pu determinations for citrate-dithionite fractions; $sup 239$Pu and $sup 240$Pu determinations for NaOH fractions; $sup 239$Pu and $sup 240$Pu determinations for fusion fractions; and fulvic acid vs. humic acid distribution of sedimentary $sup 239$Pu and $sup 240$Pu. Results indicated that $sup 239$Pu and $sup 240$Pu concentrations were low in all samples and that $sup 239$Pu and $sup 240$Pu in sediments was relatively immobile and none was in the form of refractory particles.
