Comprehensive preventive maintenance planning

Conference ·
OSTI ID:405473

Preventing unplanned equipment failure and subsequent outages while increasing plant availability and capacity factors are critical to the long-term profitability and performance of independent power producers (IPP`s). For example, at most of the facilities operated by North American Energy Services (North American), there are contractual penalties for loss of plant availability capacity. Additionally, if the plant is a cogeneration facility, such penalties apply to the loss of steam as well as electricity. To the steam customer this loss interrupts the manufacturing process and erodes confidence in steam service reliability. In order to meet customer expectations in the areas of plant availability, capacity, and reliability, North American developed a comprehensive Preventive Maintenance (PM) Program with the strategy of improving plant performance and reliability. The basis for our comprehensive PM Program is a methodical process of research and development. This process is not revolutionary. It consists of taking the time to identify the appropriate PM actions and to develop procedures to support the proper completion of those actions. While North American has been continually improving our PM methods for many years, our formalized Preventive Maintenance Program was first introduced at the COGEN Technologies` Camden Plant in 1993.
