Title: CATION EXCHANGE SEPARATION OF ALKALINE EARTH ELEMENTS, Al AND Fe WITH FORMATE BUFFER SOLUTION CONTAINING METHANOL (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Nippon Kagaku Zasshi (Japan) Formerly Nippon Kagaku Kaishi (1921- 47) Merged with Kogyo Kagaku Zasshi to form Nippon Kagaku Kaishi

The ion-exchange separation of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Al, and Fe with the buffer solution of formic acid and ammonium formate containing methanol was studied. The exchanger used was Dowex 50W-X8. Addition of methanol to an eluant of formate buffer solution slows down the elution rate of alkaline earth elements. The result is similar to that obtained previously in the case of hydrochloric acid. The heavier the atomic weight of alkaline earth elements and the lower the pH of formate buffer solution, the slower the elution rate becomes. Little effect of methanol was observed in the case of Al, which was separated at lower pH, and a slightly larger rate of elution was obtained. This effect could not be found as regards Fe, which has the largest of all the elution rate. The cation exchange separation of these six elements can be accomplished satisfactorily utilizing the experimental fact mentioned above. For example, Fe, Al, and Mg were separated successively with formate buffer solution of pH 3.5 containing 10% methanol, Ca with that of pH 4.9 containing 10% methanol, Sr with that of pH 6.0, and finally Ba with 1.5 mole/l ammonium formate.
