A process for the production of metallic uranium or uranium alloys through thermic reduction of a uranium double fluoride with an excess of reducing agent selected from a group consisting of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and aluminum is described. The process consists of heat treating the uranium double fluoride to raise its apparent density, grinding the densified fluoride, mixing the ground product with the reducing agent, tamping the resulting mixture, and bringing about the reduction by heating the mixture. The uranium double fluorides sre heat treated between 110 deg C and the melting point of the fluorides. (N.W.R.)
