The production of UF/sub 6/ due to the action of F/sub 2/ on UF/sub 4/ necessitates first the production of UF/sub 5/. It is found that, with the high temperatures necessary to produce a reasonably fast reaction, UF/sub 5/ powder becomes soft and has a tendency to conglomerate. To overcome this, a fluidizing bed is used. It consists of a material impervious to the action of UF/sub 4/ and F/sub 2/, for instance CaF/sub 2/, MgF/sub 2/, AlF/sub 3/, or CoF/sub 3/. This bed ensures also a better homogeneity of the process temperature.(EURATOM)
