Experiments were conducted to determine the rate of convective heat transfer from cylindrical waste packages in a model of a drift. Thermocouples were used to measure the temperatures on the waste package surface and on the drift wall as a function of the Rayleigh number (Ra) for the buoyancy-induced flow, and the Reynolds number (Re) with air flowing through the drift. The results show how the Nusselt number is influenced by the combination of natural convection and forced convection for a series of different waste package spacings.
