A major challenge facing many of the Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear defense facilities is maintaining compliance with current regulations in facilities that were built in the 1949s and 50`s. One of these facilities is the Savannah River Site (SRS), a DOE owned, contractor operated nuclear defense complex located in South Carolina-SRS was constructed during the early 1950`s to produce basic materials used in the fabrication of nuclear weapons, primarily tritium and plutonium-239. The Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC) has managed and operated the Site since 1989. This paper describes the high-level radioactive waste management program at the Savannah River Plant.
