IMPROVED VANADIUM-BASE ALLOYS. Bimonthly Report No. 1

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4052036

Progress in the investigation to develop vanadium-base sheet alloys with improved elevated temperature strength is reported. Fabrication of the arc-east "pancake' ingots to 0.050 in. sheet was performed by hot and cold rolling techniques. The V--3ONb alloy prepared using high-purity research-grade vanadium was cold rolled directly to sheet, whereas previously prepared material using commercialgrade vanadium could not be fabricated. Tensile testing of V -5 Ti -20 Nb-base compositions was conducted at room temperature, 1800 deg , and 2000 deg F. Specimens were protected by an inert atmosphere at elevated temperatures to prevent oxidaation. The V-5Ti-2ONb-0.1B alloy was tested at 1800 deg F in the as- worked condition, but results did not show improvement over the fully annealed V- 5Ti -2ONb alloy. (auth)
