A bibliographic review of the progress made in the field of scintillation counters is presented. The possibilities for these counters and the measuring apparatus using them are discussed. Details of the performance of some scintillation counter assemblies are discussed and described starting from counters whose principal constituents, scintillators and photomultipliers, are manufactured by French industry.
