Yucca Mountain is composed of a layered volcanic sequence of pyroclastic-flow and pyroclastic fall-out deposits. Within the central block of Yucca Mountain, the exposed rocks, composed almost entirely of the Paintbrush Group (12.8 to 12.7 Ma), are moderately to densely welded and devitrified tuffs intercalated with relatively thin intervals of nonwelded and bedded tuffs. For the purposes of hydrologic modeling, stratigraphically contiguous rock units have been grouped into hydrogeologic units on the basis of their similar hydrologic and physical properties.
