A meeting on the origin of cosmic rays was held at the Research Institute of Fundamental Physics, Kyoto University, in May, 1963. Results and problems in recent observations on cosmic rays were presented. The energy spectra of cosmic rays, the galaxy, the composition of cosmic rays, Fermi acceralation and supernovae were presented as basic knowledge. The following subjects were discussed: galactic electrons, the secondary electron hypothesis for their origin and its verification by the ratio of positrons to electrons in primary cosmic rays; gamma -ray astronomy, its significance, and experimental methods; anisotropy in the arrival directions of heavy nuclei; the new theory of evolution of stars and supernovae by Hayashi et al. and its development; acceleration of cosmic rays, the acceleration mechanism of solar cosmic rays, and its generalization; and extragalactic sources of cosmic rays with special reference to radio galaxies.
